What caused my anorexia?
Anorexia starts with some form of food restriction and/or increased physical activity. For example, the risk of being affected by anorexia is greater if you are engaged in some intense sport, such as soccer, running, or swimming. Often you gradually eat less and less, and the more weight you lose, the more difficult it becomes to eat. The hunger sensations disappear even after you haven’t eaten for a while, and you feel full all the time. At first you feel good physically, and you also feel great when your friends say that you look slimmer. But then, the negative effects of weight loss appear: you think about food and dieting all the time, you suddenly realize that you do not know what a normal portion of food is, nor do you know how much to eat or at what pace. The satiety is out of use. The signal that shall end a meal does not work. Your pulse slows and you feel cold all the time. Anxiety, depression and dark thoughts drop straight into your lap.
